Overview
GST registration gives your business a 15-character GSTIN, which lets you charge GST on your invoices, claim input tax credit on your purchases and file returns. Without it, a business that is required to register cannot lawfully collect GST.
Registration is a PAN-based, online process on the GST portal. You verify mobile and email, fill in business details, upload documents and complete Aadhaar authentication. The tax officer then reviews the application and either approves it or raises a query.
Registration can also be taken voluntarily. Many small businesses do this so they can claim credit on purchases and supply to larger buyers who want GST invoices.
Do you need to register?
The rules depend on what you sell, where you sell it and how much you sell.
Usually a good fit if
- Your aggregate turnover crosses the threshold: generally 40 lakh rupees for goods and 20 lakh rupees for services, with lower limits in special category states.
- You make inter-state supplies of goods, or sell through e-commerce marketplaces.
- You are liable to pay tax under reverse charge, or are an input service distributor, casual taxable person or non-resident taxable person.
- You want to supply to businesses that need a GST invoice, even if your turnover is below the limit.
Think twice if
- Your turnover is below the limit and you only supply within your state; registration will add monthly or quarterly returns you do not strictly need.
- You deal only in goods or services that are fully exempt from GST.
