Overview
Udyam registration is the government's registration for micro, small and medium enterprises. It is done online on the official portal, it is free, and the certificate does not need yearly renewal, although you are expected to keep the information updated.
Classification depends on investment in plant and machinery or equipment and on turnover. From 1 April 2025 the limits are: micro up to 2.5 crore investment and 10 crore turnover, small up to 25 crore investment and 100 crore turnover, and medium up to 125 crore investment and 500 crore turnover.
Registration is linked to your PAN and, where you have one, your GST registration. Income tax return and GST data are used to confirm turnover. It supports access to certain schemes, priority-sector lending and some payment-protection provisions. It is not a licence to operate, and it does not by itself exempt you from any tax or compliance.
Should you register?
Most small businesses can and many gain from it.
Usually a good fit if
- You manufacture, trade or provide services and fall within the MSME limits.
- You want to apply for MSME loans, collateral-free credit schemes or subsidies.
- You supply to larger buyers and want the benefit of the MSME payment-timeline rules.
- You want a recognised business identity for tenders and vendor onboarding.
Think twice if
- You are above the medium enterprise limits; the registration will not apply.
- You are engaged in an activity excluded from the MSME scheme, such as some purely financial activities; we confirm before applying.

Scheme eligibility

Tender benefits
Some government purchases reserve a share for MSMEs.
Free and online
No fee is payable to the government for registering.

Frequently asked questions
Is Udyam registration free?
Yes, on the government portal. Professional fees, where you use an adviser, are for the help in preparing and checking the application, not a government charge.
Is GST registration needed for Udyam?
If you are required to have a GST registration, its details must be given. Some businesses without a GST registration can still register, depending on their activity.
What is the difference between Udyam and the old Udyog Aadhaar?
Udyog Aadhaar and earlier registrations were replaced by Udyam. Older registrations were migrated to the new system.
Can a service business register?
Yes. Both manufacturing and service enterprises can register, subject to the limits.
Does registration give me tax exemption?
No. It is an identity and a gateway to schemes, not a tax exemption. Tax rules apply as usual.
Do I have to renew each year?
No. The certificate does not expire, but you should update the information when it changes.
