Overview
GSTR-9 is the annual return in which a registered taxpayer consolidates sales, tax paid, input tax credit and adjustments for the financial year. It is filed after the year closes, and it is the last chance to correct certain reporting differences.
GSTR-9C is a reconciliation statement that compares the figures in the annual return with the audited financial statements. Larger taxpayers must file it with a self-certification, and differences between books and returns have to be explained.
Small taxpayers below the prescribed turnover are allowed to skip the annual return or file a simpler version, but many still file to tidy up their record.
Who needs this service?
Any registered taxpayer who has to or wants to close the year cleanly.
Usually a good fit if
- Your turnover is above the limit for mandatory annual return or reconciliation.
- Your sales, purchases or credit in returns do not match your books.
- You want to claim or reverse credit that was missed during the year.
- You received a notice about a mismatch and want a clean annual position.
Think twice if
- Your turnover is within the exempt limit and your monthly returns already match your books; filing may be optional, though still useful.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C?
GSTR-9 is the annual return itself. GSTR-9C is a reconciliation of that return with the audited financial statements, which larger taxpayers have to file.
Is the annual return mandatory for everyone?
Not for every taxpayer. Small taxpayers below the prescribed turnover may be exempt or file a simpler return. We confirm the rule for your year.
What is the due date?
Usually 31 December following the financial year, though it is sometimes extended.
Can I correct earlier returns in the annual return?
Only within what the rules allow. Some differences can be reported in the annual return, but there are limits, so we check what is permitted.
What if I miss the due date?
A late fee applies for each day of delay, up to a cap, and unreconciled differences can lead to notices.
Do I need an auditor for GSTR-9C?
The reconciliation is now self-certified by the taxpayer, but it has to be backed by audited accounts, and many businesses have a professional prepare it.
