Overview
The Import Export Code, or IEC, is a ten-digit number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. It is required to import goods into India or export goods out of it, and customs, banks and shipping lines ask for it. It is linked to the PAN of the entity, so each PAN has one IEC.
The application is made online on the DGFT portal. It is based on the PAN, and verification is done with an email and mobile OTP. A small government fee applies, and the code, once issued, does not expire.
IEC holders are required to update their details every year during a specific window to keep the code active. If the update is missed, the IEC can be deactivated until it is regularised. Exports of services generally do not require an IEC, although you may still need one to claim certain government benefits.
Do you need an IEC?
The need depends on what you plan to move across the border and how you will be paid.
Usually a good fit if
- You import goods for trade or business use, or export goods from India.
- You sell through cross-border e-commerce or courier export.
- You want to claim export benefits, incentive schemes or duty drawback.
- Your bank asks for an IEC to process foreign remittances for goods.
Think twice if
- You export only services, and do not need to claim any benefits under the foreign trade policy.
- You import goods strictly for personal use, where an IEC is not required.
